A Potential Employer Sent Me Equipment Before A Contract Was Signed, And Then Rescinded The Job Offer. I Haven’t Been Able To Return The Equipment Yet And Now He’s Threatening To Report Me To The Police. What Should I Do?

Location: I’m in Michigan (US) and he’s in Indiana (US). Last month an employer offered me employment, and sent me equipment (3 computer monitors, a surge protector, a key board, a PC tower, and a WiFi extender). Due to an unexpected death in the family that took me out of the state I was unable to start on a date (October 20) that he wanted me to start, so he rescinded the employment offer. He then asked me to mail him back all of the equipment and he would reimburse me.

I’m now rushing to try to find a different position and because of this I haven’t had the extra money to mail back such a large amount of items. I fully intend on returning everything as soon as I possibly can, but just can’t afford it right now. He just sent me a message saying that if it’s not mailed out by tomorrow he’ll be reporting me for theft to the police in his town. Is this something that I should be worrying about? I really don’t want a theft charge on my record over this.
