A Car I Haven't Owned In Years Caused Property Damage, And Now I'm Being Sued

Firstly, I've already started reaching out to lawyers. I'm mainly posting here because I'm scared out of my mind and want to know roughly what to expect.

A few months ago, I received legal notice from a regional law firm that said that my vehicle had been involved in an accident and caused considerable damage to another driver's vehicle. I hadn't been driving the vehicle, didn't know the person the notice listed as the driver, and in fact I hadn't set eyes on the vehicle since I sold it to a local guy who scraps cars.

I was rattled by the notice, so I called the issuing law firm and explained that I hadn't been in possession of that vehicle in some time. I told them where to find the scrapper, and at the time the lawyer seemed to be satisfied with that and said he would call back if he had any further questions. I explained that the guy told me that he would handle the transfer of title, and it now it looks like he didn't.

I then texted the scrapper, because I wanted to see if he had actually scrapped it or instead repainted it and sold it as his own. He insisted that he hadn't resold it and instead brought it to another local scrap yard to have it broken down. He claimed he turned the title over to them, and it was their job to transfer ownership and scrap the vehicle. He said it was likely a scam and to ignore it. I didn't believe him and the fact that he had outsourced the scrapping to another company was immediately suspicious, but in the end there wasn't much I could do about it.

Today a sheriff's deputy knocked on my door and served me notice that I was being sued for over 10K dollars. I can't even afford insurance, much less this kind of money and I don't have any family that can help me. I know there's probably a lot more information that I haven't thought to add, so whatever I can give clarification on let me know.

EDIT: Also, as a follow up question, upon reviewing the lawsuit it says that the notice is dated November 14th, but the sheriff's deputy delivered it today on November 30th. Does this mean I have less than the 21 days listed in the notice to find a lawyer and respond? And the notice was served open without an envelope, does this matter?
