The Kansas City Royals may have dropped Tuesday night’s game 10-2 to the New York Yankees, but it was a night rookie Jac Caglianone won’t soon forget.

Making his home debut in front of 30,017 fans at Kauffman Stadium, the 22-year-old made his presence felt. Caglianone drove in one of the Royals’ runs and continued his recent hot streak, collecting his sixth hit in his last 12 at-bats and extending his hitting streak to three games.

He knocked in a run in the second inning with a groundout to second base, scoring Vinnie Pasquantino. He later singled to right field in the ninth for his lone hit of the night.

After the game, Caglianone spoke with the media. McKenzie Nelson, who covers the Royals, shared the rookie’s comment about a very special guest in the crowd:

“I had to do something cool…”

That “something cool” was for none other than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes, who was seated near the field.

Reflecting on his home debut, Caglianone added:

“Really cool. To kinda hear the crowd react the way they did. A super warm welcome. I’m thankful for everybody that was part of it.”

Then came a moment of humor when he brought up seeing Mahomes in the stands:

“It was pretty cool to see Pat Mahomes there.”

With a grin, he admitted:

“My second-to-last AB, I just kinda looked over and kinda smiled, and I was like, all right, I got to do something cool ... then I rolled over.”

The Royals and Yankees continue their three-game set Wednesday before Kansas City welcomes the Oakland Athletics to town this weekend.

Through 67 games, Kansas City sits at 34-33, fourth in the American League Central and 9.5 games behind the division-leading Detroit Tigers. The call-up of Caglianone was meant to provide an offensive spark for a team struggling to score. The Royals rank 28th in MLB in runs per game at just 3.4.
