Senate Democrats Propose Emergency Payment For Seniors Hit By Inflation
Senate Democrats have introduced a bill to expand Social Security Administration (SSA) and Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) benefits by $200 per month for six months, aiming to provide economic relief amid persistently high inflation.
The move follows the Oct. 24 announcement of an average cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) of 2.8% in 2026 for the 53 million Americans who receive Social Security retirement benefits — an increase of about $56 per month.
“Seniors face difficult decisions as they see their bank accounts shrinking, and the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment is simply not reflective of the current reality,” said New York Democrat Senator Chuck Schumer in a statement.
The proposal, called the Social Security Emergency Inflation Relief Act, would provide the additional payments from January through June 2026.
The bill’s sponsors also pointed to the ongoing government shutdown, which has disrupted SSA services and made it harder for seniors to access benefits amid rising costs.
The legislation was introduced by Senators Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.),and Tina Smith (D-Minn.).
According to the lawmakers, seniors have been particularly affected by president Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which they argue have fueled inflation.
“This new legislation to expand Social Security is an emergency lifeline for seniors struggling to afford Trump’s tariffs and rising inflation,” Warren said in a statement.
Senator Welch added, “For seniors living on a fixed income, the President’s tariffs and rising inflation have meant that their Social Security benefits don’t stretch as far as they used to. Our bill provides a financial lifeline to seniors to help them weather the disastrous impacts of Trump’s trade war.”
Lawmakers noted that half of all American seniors rely on Social Security for at least half of their income, while one in four depend on it as their only source of income. More than half of seniors’ monthly spending goes toward basic needs such as housing, food and transportation.
The bill would benefit seniors, veterans and Americans with disabilities who live on fixed incomes.
