Voltempo's Cabless Electric Lorry Promises 15% More Cargo By Deleting The Driver

A British startup is building a 15.6-metre autonomous rigid truck with no cab at all, betting that ditching the driver unlocks space logistics firms will pay for.

Voltempo, a British electric vehicle company, is developing a 15.6-metre rigid electric lorry with no driver's cab. The entire front end is cargo space. The claim is 15 per cent more capacity than a conventional HGV of comparable type, which sounds modest until you consider that logistics companies spend their lives trying to squeeze an extra pallet onto every run.

The design is straightforward enough in theory. If the vehicle is fully autonomous, the cab is dead weight. Two metres of vehicle length currently occupied by a human, a seat, pedals, a windscreen, and a dashboard becomes two metres of payload. For an industry that measures margins in fractions of pence per mile, that is not nothing.

But the practical questions stack up quickly. Standard UK rigid HGVs are limited to 12 metres. Voltempo's design is 15.6. That likely means special permits, route restrictions, and infrastructure that was not designed for it. British roads are tight enough with normal lorries. A longer rigid vehicle with no human at the wheel navigating a wet roundabout in Swindon is a different proposition to a Tesla Semi on a Nevada interstate.

Then there is the autonomy itself. Current UK law requires a safety operator in autonomous vehicles during testing. Fine for now, but the entire business case collapses if you still need someone sitting in ... well, there is no cab to sit in. Voltempo will presumably need to solve that with remote monitoring or regulatory changes, neither of which are trivial.

The timing is awkward too. Einride has been running cabless autonomous Pod trucks in Sweden and the US since 2020, so the concept is proven in controlled environments. But TuSimple, Aurora, and others have scaled back autonomous trucking plans over the past year. Arrival, another British electric vehicle startup with serious early backing, collapsed in 2023. Bold claims, impressive renders, then either very slow progress or total failure.

What Voltempo has in its favour is focus. This is not a sprawling product line or a moonshot battery technology. It is one specific vehicle for one specific use case: point to point freight on predictable routes where the 15 per cent capacity gain justifies the infrastructure investment. Assuming the tech does what it needs to do and assuming UK logistics firms are willing to bet on it.

The plan is to test and build the lorry in the UK, which matters more than it sounds. British manufacturing credibility in this space is fragile. If Voltempo can actually get vehicles into real-world testing and demonstrate that the design works in British conditions ... rain, narrow A-roads, the M25 at 4pm on a Friday ... that is worth something. Sound familiar? If it cannot, it joins the long list of electric vehicle startups that looked plausible on paper and went nowhere.

There is also the question of what happens to the UK's 300,000 HGV drivers, though that is a longer-term problem and one the industry has been pretending not to notice for years. Autonomy in logistics is coming regardless of Voltempo. The only question is whether it arrives as a British-built solution or as someone else's import.

The 15 per cent capacity figure is the hook, but the real test is whether this thing can reverse into a Tesco distribution centre in the dark without taking out a bollard.

Voltempo has not yet announced production timelines or customer commitments. The vehicle is still in development.
