Lions’ 53-man Roster Prediction For 2026 Nfl Season

The Detroit Lions have Super Bowl aspirations for the 2026 season. Detroit spent the offseason reloading the roster with talent and bringing in players who fit the team’s gritty culture. Dan Campbell wants his team to get back to basics to renew their hungry mindset from the earlier years of his regime.

The main vehicle that Campbell used to install that attitude in his team is competition. Detroit brought in depth pieces at every position this offseason to create competition during training camp and the preseason.

Now the Lions are faced with some tough decisions as they narrow the roster down to its best 53 players.

Here is one version of what Detroit’s final 53-man roster could look like.

Quarterbacks (2)

Jared Goff, Joshua Dobbs

This shouldn’t be a big surprise for Lions fans.

Dobbs proved that he is the better option than UDFA Luke Altmeyer during the preseason. Perhaps Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement will end up being a blessing in disguise.

Meanwhile, Altmeyer flashed some potential during training camp practices. If he does not make the final roster, he will probably end up on Detroit’s practice squad.

Running backs (4)

Jahmyr Gibbs, Isiah Pacheco, Sione Vaki, Jacob Saylors

It will be fascinating to see how the touches are distributed among this group.

Gibbs will certainly gets the majority of the work, which is exciting to think about. Whenever Gibbs has the ball in his hands, great things happen. So it is exciting to consider that happening several times on every single drive.

Meanwhile, Pacheco can handle power running duties and Vaki may finally get some consistent snaps on offense.

If the Lions keep Saylors, it will be purely for his special teams skills. Otherwise, Detroit might choose to keep a sixth wide receiver like Tom Kennedy.

Wide receivers (5)

Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Isaac TeSlaa, Greg Dortch, Dominic Lovett

The three names at the top of the depth chart are no-brainers.

Dortch followed OC Drew Petzing over from Arizona and figures to fill the Kalif Raymond role. He should be the team’s WR4 and return specialist.

The fifth spot feels like a tie between Lovett and Kennedy, but Lovett gets the nod here because of his rookie contract.

It is also worth mentioning that rookie Kendrick Law is on injured reserve after suffering a season-ending ACL injury back in June.

Tight Ends (3)

Sam LaPorta, Brock Wright, Tyler Conklin

Not many surprises here.

LaPorta is finally healthy and should have a big role in Petzing’s offense. But there should be plenty of work left for Wright and Conklin too.

By the way, Conklin is a great addition who fits Detroit’s offensive philosophy perfectly.

This may be one of the most complete position groups on the team from top to bottom.

Offensive linemen (9)

Penei Sewell, Blake Miller, Tate Ratledge, Christian Mahogany, Juice Scruggs, Seth McLaughlin, Larry Borom, Ben Bartch, Miles Frazier

Cade Mays will start the season on injured reserve. Backup tackle Giovanni Manu may also start the season on the NFI list.

Detroit will start either Scruggs or McLaughlin at center while Mays gets healthy.

The Lions are being a little bit risky only keeping one backup tackle in this scenario. But Manu can (hopefully) provide more depth once healthy. Detroit could deploy more tight ends if they want to get more beef on the field.

If Miller and Ratledge can play well together on the right side, Detroit’s offensive line could be a lot better than it was in 2025.

Defensive linemen (10)

Aidan Hutchinson, Derrick Moore, DJ Wonnum, Ahmed Hassanein, Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams, Levi Onwuzurike, Tyler Lacy, Skyler Gill-Howard, Chris Smith

The defensive line could determine Detroit’s fate in many games this season. Fortunately, the roster has more talent than it has in several years.

Hutchinson finally has some reinforcements on the edge in Wonnum and Moore. Hassanein stayed healthy during the preseason and looked pretty promising. He’s certainly the x-factor of the group.

McNeill and Williams will both be counted on to excel in starting roles on the interior.

Detroit’s depth is pretty impressive too, with Onwuzurike, Lacy, Smith, and Gill-Howard all looking like useful pieces.

Linebacker (6)

Jack Campbell, Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Trevor Nowaske, Devin White, Damone Clark

The starting trio of Campbell, Barnes, and Rodriguez is a solid group.

Detroit also has admirable depth with Nowaske filling his usual role, plus White and Clark serving as backups behind Campbell and Rodriguez.

Campbell is the real star of the show, but Detroit has useful pieces across the board.

Cornerback (7)

D.J. Reed, Rock Ya-Sin, Roger McCreary, Keith Abney II, Nick Whiteside, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., Khalil Dorsey

This position group looks thin at the top without Terrion Arnold. But the silver lining is that Detroit has plenty of depth entering the regular season.

Reed and Ya-Sin project as starters on the boundary. Whiteside flashed some promise in 2025 and should be a solid depth player and Dorsey is a special teams ace.

McCreary is the biggest surprise on the list. Detroit has big expectations for him entering training camp, but he’s been a major disappointment. Perhaps Detroit’s lack of talent at cornerback will keep him on the roster, at least initially.

Finally, Rakestraw is the biggest unknown of the entire group. His upside is high, but injuries have derailed his career thus far. Hopefully he can stay healthy and play a sizeable role this fall.

Safety (4)

Avonte Maddox, Chuck Clark, Thomas Harper, Christian Izien

Both Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph will likely begin the season on injured reserve. Once they return, this position group will be a lot stronger.

Izien is listed as a safety here, but he may play some snaps at cornerback, especially early in the season.

Maddox is a trusty veteran who has already spent time in Kelvin Sheppard’s defense. Clark should fit in nicely too thanks to his veteran experience. Plus it will be exciting to see how Harper has grown since his Detroit debut last season.
