Falls Prevention Awareness Week Underway In Michigan

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Falls Prevention Awareness Week is underway in Michigan. Governor Gretchen Whitmer made an official proclamation Monday morning, recognizing the cause.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says falls are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65. Experts say there's a lot we can do to prevent falls in the future. 

One in four older adults report falling every year, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

"In 2023, the latest data we have, over 1500 fall-related deaths were reported in Michigan,” said Nick Drzal, health promotion and active aging manager for MDHHS. “One out of five falls causes a serious injury such as a broken bone or head injury."

Drzal says falls may be common but can also be preventable. 

"Many falls can be prevented through awareness," said Drzal.

Experts like Drzal recommend having open conversations with your family and doctors about your fall risk.

"Bringing out those conversations with loved ones and friends raises the awareness enough so that people start thinking about, 'Oh, what's in my environment and how can I prevent falls?'” said Drzal. “Falls increase with age. They can be influenced by medications, vision, [and] balance issues. "

Drzal recommends reviewing medications that could interfere with balance or alertness, staying active and strong, and making small changes around the house to improve safety. 

"Just [remove] clutter and obstacles from walkways and doorways, secure loose rugs and remove or remove them entirely," said Drzal.
