Can Ai Make City Streets Safer? Columbia University Researchers Are Working On It
Cities generate enormous amounts of movement every day, including cars, bikes, pedestrians, and emergency vehicles. At Columbia University’s Center for Smart Streetscapes, researchers are using AI and sensor technology to better understand how streets function and how they can operate more safely and efficiently.
By analyzing anonymized public space data, researchers can measure traffic patterns, detect congestion, and help emergency responders reach hospitals faster. Working closely with partners like the FDNY, the team has helped reduce emergency response times in parts of New York City.
The project’s Harlem testbed allows researchers to collaborate with local residents, community leaders, and city agencies to address real challenges in urban streets. One recent innovation includes a pedestrian bike alert system designed to help prevent collisions in increasingly busy streets.
The goal is smarter streets that improve safety, mobility, and quality of life while protecting privacy.
