There Is No Such Thing As Attachment Styles

Attachment Styles Are Labels We Need to Stop Using.

We talk about attachment styles like they’re personality types you’re stuck with forever — anxious, avoidant, secure, anxious-avoidant. But in my opinion, that’s the wrong way to look at relationships.

Most of the attachment research was done decades ago, heavily based on children, and we still don’t have nearly enough modern evidence on adult relationships.

What I do see clinically is this: it’s your behaviours that set your patterns.
If you feel anxious in relationships and you change your behaviours, the anxiety shifts.
If you feel suffocated and you choose partners who give you more space, that feeling changes too.

These labels can make people believe something is “wrong” with them or that they’re stuck with one style for life. But humans run in cycles — and when you break the cycle with different behaviours, you create a completely different emotional experience.

You are not your “style.” You’re simply repeating patterns you can absolutely change.
