With No New Game On The Horizon, Is Animal Crossing’s 3.0 Update Enough To Keep Fans Satisfied?

Card image cap

Released in 2020, Animal Crossing: New Horizons became more than a cozy experience for gamers during the pandemic. It was about escapism and connection, and many of those players remain steadfast fans despite the lack of Animal Crossing DLC and updates for nearly six years. They cultivate their islands and join in with the same yearly events without fail.

However, loyalty doesn’t mean interest, and while dedicated islanders may have been initially excited by the news that the game is getting its second free DLC next year, it’s hard not to be frustrated by the lack of a sequel instead. Are Nintendo doing enough to keep longtime Animal Crossing players engaged, or is the island dream finally over?

The Escapist recaps

  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons rose quickly as the number one game during the pandemic.
  • The Animal Crossing 3.0 Update is the second free DLC for the game.
  • The update focuses heavily on the decorating mechanic of the original game.
  • Long-term fans will find the content fun, but they’ll still be checking their watches for the next game.

The free update, to be released January 14, 2026, is the first for both the Switch and the Switch 2 and brings a brand new game mechanic to your island. With a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, Animal Crossing: New Horizons players can enjoy new furniture collaborations with LEGO, The Legend of Zelda, and Splatoon, as well as a new ‘Slumber Island’ mode.

With this new dream mode, players can design up to three separate islands and share, decorate, and build with friends. You can also invite the villagers from your own island to visit this new getaway you’ve created with others.

Enjoy a vast new storage system, with home storage now updated to 9,000 items, which can be used to store trees, shrubs, and flowers. And while not specifically mentioned in the update trailer, bulk crafting appears to be a new mechanic that will be welcomed by players old and new, as well as the return of a beloved character, Mr. Resetti.

The biggest part of the Animal Crossing Update comes in the form of a Resort Hotel at the end of your island’s pier. This new venture, run by Kapp’n’s family, gives players the chance to decorate themed rooms for the hotel guests and earn ‘Hotel Tickets’, used to purchase unique items.

For long-term islanders, many of these changes and add-ons will make jumping back into their game smooth sailing, especially for those who prioritize building and decorating over any task-based gameplay. The creative open world of Slumber Island revitalizes building goals, and the entire update recognizes players who’ve already finished much of what the game previously offered.

While restarting your island is an option (and one made easier now with the help of Mr. Resetti), the update isn’t really targeted for early or midgame; it appears to be aimed at providing new mechanics and goals to keep island life interesting. So whether you decide to start afresh or carry on with what’s already been built, you won’t lose out.

The Resort Hotel is a charming new way to engage with island visitors, and the fresh canvas of Slumbr Island actually gives you something to do other than greet your residents every day (if you’ve finished your island). These parts of the update evoke nostalgia while adding freshness, all without disrupting the core gameplay loop.

Despite the pleasant nature of the Animal Crossing 3.0 Update, this content does feel very ‘samey’. The first paid DLC was Happy Home Paradise, and it’s hard to see how the new Hotel Resort, be it sweet, isn’t just the same refurbished task. Despite appearing to include a lot of new content, the majority of the update feels more like a patch than anything substantial.

Will Animal Crossing’s 3.0 be enough to keep fans satisfied?

While any new update to a beloved game is welcomed across the board by fans, it’s safe to say that many were actually hoping for news about a sequel or new game in the franchise instead. The Animal Crossing: New Horizons 3.0 update isn’t small, offering mainly new customizations; however, the worry now is that this is meager compensation for what will be a much longer wait for a whole new game.

For fans of decorating, a new space to do it in will liven up the island, but for those who didn’t get much out of Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, there isn’t that much on offer. When considering what comes next for Animal Crossing, expectations were high, and instead of being something more transformative, it feels like extra content left out of the original launch.

Despite just adding to the already provided ‘home makeover’ mechanic and little else, dedicated fans will probably have a few fun hours in the update. Still, when it comes to predictions on how it’ll feel once the excitement has worn off, it’s easy to see them still left craving a real evolution of the franchise and see this free DLC as a pleasant stopgap on the way to the next game.

Ask The Escapist

When will there be a new Animal Crossing game?

Each Animal Crossing game has about 6-8 years between releases. So, as we approach the earlier point in that timeframe, the update suggests they plan to work more on Horizons first.

Can you play the Animal Crossing 3.0 Update on Switch 1?

Yes, the free DLC is playable on both the original Switch and Switch 2.

What does Mr. Resetti do?

Mr. Resetti makes his comeback from previous Animal Crossing games to provide a ‘Reset Service’ should you want to edit your island.

Are there any additional features or content in the Nintendo crossover/collaborations?

Players will have the chance to get Zelda visitors at their campsite and invite them to live on the island. These visitors are Tulin and Mineru.
