Microsoft has refreshed its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro laptops with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 processors. We’re looking at the Surface Pro 12th Edition and the Surface Laptop 8th Edition. These succeed the Surface Laptops and Surface Pro from 2024 that featured the Snapdragon X1 chips. The company claims the new X2 models offer up to 58% faster graphics, excellent battery life, and up to 20 hours (Surface Laptop 8) of local video playback.

Microsoft Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 debut with Snapdragon X2 chips

The Surface Pro 12th Edition convertible comes in a 13-inch touchscreen PixelSense LCD display with a 3:2 aspect ratio, 600 nits brightness in SDR mode, and a 120Hz refresh rate. The company is offering an OLED display option. The refresh is available in Snapdragon X2 Plus 10-core and Snapdragon X2 Elite 12-core configurations, paired with a Hexagon NPU with 80 TOPS and an Adreno GPU. There’s up to 64GB LPDDR5x RAM, and the storage goes up to 1TB Gen 4 SSD storage.

The Pro model gets a 1440p ultrawide front-facing camera and a 10MP rear-facing shooter. It offers Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity. There’s Windows Hello facial recognition with Enhanced Sign-in security. The machine runs on Windows 11 Home OS. Additionally, the Surface Pro Flex keyboard and Slim Pen return, and the pen now adds haptic feedback.

The Surface Pro 12 price starts at $1,499 for the base model with 16GB RAM, 256GB, an IPS display, and Snapdragon X2 Plus. It comes in Dune, Black, and Platinum colors.

The Surface Laptop 8 offers up to 20 hours of video playback

Then there’s the Microsoft Surface Laptop, which comes in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes. Both can be configured with Snapdragon X2 Plus 10-core and X2 Elite 12-core processors. The company claims the laptops offer up to 20 hours of video playback (19 hours on the 15-inch version). There’s no OLED option here, as both feature an LCD screen. They offer 600 nits peak brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate.

Both devices get Qualcomm’s Hexagon NPU with 80 TOPS and an Adreno GPU. The memory options start at 16GB RAM and go up to 64GB, and the storage goes up to 1TB. The laptops offer a 1080p front camera, a 3.5mm audio jack, Wi-Fi 7, and facial recognition.

They’re not cheap

The Microsoft Surface Laptop 8 comes in Platinum, Jade, Black, and Dune shades. As for prices, the Surface Laptops start at $1,599.99 for the 13.8-inch and $1,699.99 for the 15-inch model. The company notes that the new Snapdragon X2 Surface Pro and Surface Laptop will come to its Surface for Business on July 14th, with a starting price of $1,649.99. The new Surface machines are available starting today.

On the whole, the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 start at $100 more than the current prices of the last-gen models. To recall, the previous-gen models saw a price hike in April due to the current memory shortage crisis.
