Red Sox Reactions: Speedster Steals Home Exactly 16 Years After Jacoby Ellsbury Did It

CLEVELAND — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 7-3 win over the Guardians in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Progressive Field:

1) Jarren Duran became the first Red Sox player with a straight steal of home since Jacoby Ellsbury did it exactly 16 years ago (April 26, 2009) against the Yankees. Duran stole home in the top of the third inning, beating out Guardians starting pitcher Doug Nikhazy’s throw to the plate.

2) Duran entered 3-for-31 against lefties this year. But he had two hits against Nikhazy, a 25-year-old lefty making his MLB debut. His RBI single (108.2 mph off the bat) in the second inning put Boston ahead 2-0. His RBI triple in the third inning made it 5-0. He then stole home with the next hitter, Rafael Devers, 0-0 in the count.

3) Trevor Story broke an 0-for-17 slump with an RBI single (109.7 mph off the bat) to center field that made it 1-0 in the first inning. He also drew a walk during Boston’s three-run rally in the second inning.

4) Boston entered with three straight losses but took care of business against the rookie making his big league debut. Nikhazy pitched 3 innings, allowing six runs, five hits and six walks while striking out three.

5)Walker Buehler improved to 4-1 with a 4.28 ERA in six starts. He tossed 6 innings and allowed three runs, seven hits and one walk while striking out three.

6) The Guardians and Red Sox split the doubleheader. Cleveland won 5-4 in the first game.

7) The Red Sox and Guardians will play the rubber game of their three-game series Sunday at 1:40 p.m. Red Sox righty Brayan Bello (1-0, 1.80 ERA) will make his second start of the season. Righty Logan Allen (1-1, 2.11 ERA) will start for Cleveland.
