Nyt Sued The Pentagon Over New Press Policy
The Grey Lady is taking the five-sided building to federal court. The New York Times sued the Pentagon and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth yesterday over his department's recently rolled out press policy—which major news outlets, including the NYT, refused to follow, getting them booted from Pentagon premises.
The newspaper argues that the Pentagon’s media rules violate the First Amendment, while flouting due process guarantees with potential for arbitrary enforcement and no option to appeal press badge revocations.
Press vs. Pentagon
In October, the Pentagon asked news outlets to sign on to the new media policy, which it said was crafted to protect servicemembers. The policy forbade reporters from asking Defense Department sources for info that Pentagon officials hadn’t authorized for publication, and barred them from accessing parts of the building unaccompanied.
Thirty outlets, including the NYT, the Wall Street Journal, Fox News, and Newsmax surrendered their press badges instead of signing on. Now, the Times is asking a judge to declare the policy unconstitutional and to order the Pentagon to let its reporters back inside.
In the meantime…many news organizations are covering the Pentagon without entering it, while the Defense Department recently welcomed a new press corps consisting mostly of digital media outlets friendly to the Trump administration.—SK
