Mexico secured a place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over South Korea in Guadalajara on June 18. The win made Mexico the first team to qualify for the next round and confirmed them as Group A winners with six points from two matches. After a lacklustre first half that drew boos from sections of the home crowd, Mexico broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart when Luis Romo capitalised on a mistake by South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-gyu, who spilled a cross after colliding with a teammate. Mexico nearly extended their lead through Raul Jimenez, but Kim recovered with an excellent save. South Korea responded strongly and pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages, yet goalkeeper Raul Rangel preserved Mexico’s advantage with a remarkable double save. The victory also secured home advantage for Mexico in the Round of 32 in Mexico City. Despite the loss, South Korea remain in contention for qualification with three points from two matches.
