Lumi Ai Factory Opens Innovation Hub At Aalto University’s Otaniemi Campus
Dec. 3, 2025 — LUMI AI Factory’s Hub dedicated to AI innovation has opened at Aalto University’s Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland. The LUMI AI Factory Hub is designed to meet the practical needs of students, startups, and SMEs, offering an inspiring environment where people and organizations can network and turn ideas into tangible innovations. The hub is part of the LUMI AI Factory, the largest of the European Union’s 19 AI Factories.
This AI hub provides workspace, training facilities, and expert support to help users make the most of LUMI AI Factory’s computing and data resources. The space hosts AI-related events such as hackathons, workshops, training sessions, and business meetings, and is also available for other organisations to book for AI-themed gatherings.
“The first LUMI AI Factory Hub brings the possibilities of AI closer to our new target groups and supports hands-on networking and development. Our goal is to create a meeting place where new ideas and collaborations emerge to benefit Finnish research, business, and society. This hub in Otaniemi serves as the main hub of the LUMI AI Factory. Plans are already underway for several similar facilities, with the next hubs set to open in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and at Helsinki’s Kumpula campus. The idea is to develop the spaces based on user feedback, and activities such as training and events will be delivered in hybrid mode to ensure broad access across the hubs,” said Eeva Harjula, Project Manager for the LUMI AI Factory hubs at CSC.
The new space is located on the same floor as the ELLIS Institute, a leading center for AI research, offering direct access to cutting-edge academic expertise. However, the LUMI AI Factory Hub is open to all – no research background is required.
LUMI – Europe’s Largest AI Factory
LUMI AI Factory is one of the EU’s first AI Factories, combining everything needed for AI development: world-class computing power, high-quality data, and top-tier expertise. Services are free of charge for startups, SMEs, and academic researchers. The LUMI AI Factory accelerates AI innovation across Europe.
“Innovations often emerge at the intersections of scientific disciplines, universities, and businesses. By opening these hubs, we aim to support AI innovation by bringing scientific communities and companies together – that’s why we’re establishing physical hubs and connecting them virtually. We see hubs as dynamic laboratories for service co-design, where ambitious AI developers come together to explore how we can best support them in creating disruptive innovations. Services emerging from hubs will then be quickly made available to our customers across Europe,” says Aleksi Kallio, Director of Services at LUMI AI Factory, CSC.
AI Factory: A Platform and Accelerator for RDI Activities
The LUMI AI Factory serves as a joint platform and accelerator for RDI activities by companies, research groups and public actors, enabling the development of innovative European AI models and applications. In its initial phase, the factory utilises the LUMI supercomputer, owned by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and located at CSC’s data center in Kajaani. The current LUMI supercomputer will gradually be replaced by a next-generation EuroHPC system called LUMI-AI. The LUMI-AI computing environment will later be complemented by the LUMI-IQ quantum computer, designed for tasks that combine quantum computing and AI.
The LUMI AI Factory is hosted by a consortium including Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland. It is coordinated by CSC – IT Center for Science, and the other Finnish partners include Aalto University, AI Finland, and the University of Helsinki. In addition, Belgium, Iceland, Latvia and Switzerland are connected to the LUMI AI Factory as AI Factory Antennas.
