HIKAWA, JAPAN — Days after a powerful magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Japan’s southern prefecture of Kumamoto on July 28, displaced families are sheltering in their vehicles as widespread power outages leave thousands without electricity amid a soaring 35°C heatwave. Haruto Kubo, a 26-year-old construction company worker who rescued his grandmother moments before their home collapsed, now lives in a car with his parents and their pet dog. "I just want to take a bath now... I want to sleep under a blanket in an air-conditioned room," Kubo told Reuters from Hikawa as death tolls across the region climbed to 35 and thousands of evacuees faced years of protracted recovery.
