The History of In-N-Out Burger

In-N-Out was founded in 1948 by Harry Snyder, who introduced California’s first drive-thru hamburger stand in a space of just 100 square feet at the corner of Francisquito and Garvey in Baldwin Park. Every day before dawn, Harry visited local meat and produce markets to select fresh ingredients. Meanwhile, his wife Esther diligently handled the accounting for the new business from their nearby home.

Working late into the night in his garage after long days cooking burgers, Harry pursued his vision of letting customers order and receive their meals without leaving their car. The introduction of his unique two-way speaker system enabled the restaurant to offer a true drive-thru service.

In 1961, In-N-Out introduced its Animal Style burgers, created in response to customer requests. To make them, the patties were cooked with mustard and topped with lettuce, tomato, pickles, extra spread, and grilled onions. Two years later, in 1963, Harry opened a hamburger production plant using only the freshest ingredients.

In 1974, with a grill loaded onto a truck and joined by two of In-N-Out’s earliest associates, the Barbecue Department was launched at an event at Badillo School in Covina, California. Today, over 10 fully self-contained barbecue trucks and 125 associates serve at schools, churches, charities, weddings, birthdays, and concerts.

That same year, the company introduced its now-traditional red uniforms. Red aprons replaced the previous all-white attire, which had only included black shoes and belts.

In 1984, the company’s commitment to giving back became clear with the launch of the INO Foundation. Esther Snyder and her son Rich founded the Child Abuse Fund, which later became the In-N-Out Burger Foundation. Driven by Esther’s belief that every child deserves a chance and a future, the foundation raises money year-round to support residential treatment, emergency shelters, foster care, and early intervention for children in need.

Because the company covers 100% of the foundation’s administrative costs, every dollar raised goes directly to centers helping abused children. This includes millions of dollars raised in recent years.

Later, in 1990, the Homeless Feeding Program was launched. Using the barbecue trailers, associates prepare meals for those in need. The program has since expanded to offer three monthly barbecue missions and currently serves organizations such as the Los Angeles Mission, the Ventura Rescue Mission, and the Long Beach Mission.
