H.s. Softball: Pine Grove Secures District 11 3a Championship Spot With Shut Out Win Over Northern Lehigh

ORWIGSBURG — Pine Grove’s offense showed out as they took down Northern Lehigh 10-0 in District 11 3A softball action.

The Lady Cardinals connected on 13 overall hits in the quarterfinal win. Hannah Aungst led Pine Grove going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs. Callee Leffler went 2-for-3 with a home run and drove in two runs. On the mound Chelcy Clark earned the win as she went six innings and struck out five.

“I have been trying to take some pitches and make the pitchers pitch more,” said Aungst. “When there are runners on base we really want to get them in. The game is only seven innings.”

Pine Grove (22-2) wasted no time getting on the board. Leffler gave Pine Grove a 1-0 lead after she hit a home run on the second pitch of the game.

Northern Lehigh (11-11) threatened in the top of the second inning with runners on first and second and one out. Clark got out of trouble as she forced a double play ground out.

The Lady Cardinals scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 7-0 lead. Tailyn Bohr reached first base on an error. Clark drew a walk. Lily Flynn came up next and hit an RBI double to left field. Meadow Umbenhauer followed with a two-run double. Leffler got on base after being intentionally walked. Which led to a two-run double by Aungst. Madison Shiffer drove in the seventh run for Pine Grove after she hit an RBI double.

“Offensively I thought we did a good job making some adjustments,” said Pine Grove’s head coach Ryan Leffler. “We did a good job making contact and passing the bat there.”

Clark and Pine Grove’s defense shut down Northern Lehigh over the next few innings.

“The kids have been backing each other up and making great plays,” said Coach Leffler.

The Lady Cardinals offense would strike again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Leffler hit an RBI double to make it 8-0 and Aungst added her third RBI of the game to make it 9-0 after a single putting the Lady Cardinals in position to win by mercy rule.

“We are picking it up with our offense,” said Aungst. “Passing the bat to score the runs.”

Clark retired Northern Lehigh in the top of the sixth inning forcing a groundout, strike out and pop out.

Pine Grove took care of business in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure the win. Addison Zimmerman got on base with a single. Following a line out and strikeout. Clark came up next and hit a double to put runners on second and third. Flynn came up next and hit an RBI single to give Pine Grove the 10-0 win.

Coach Leffler credited his team’s preparation leading to their success. He stated his team comes to practice everyday wanting to get better.

Pine Grove will meet the winner of Pen Argyl and Palisades in the 3A title game on Wednesday with a time and place to be announced.

“We just want to be positive all throughout the game and pick each other up throughout the game,” said Aungst.
