First Small Business Idea

Card image cap

Hey guys! So I recently got into University and have an idea that I’m not very sure about.

I love 3D modeling and a few days back I thought to myself “wait! What if I use my 3D modeling skills to 3D print custom made items like pen cups and sell them at my university?”. This is my first time attempting anything business-like in my life.

Im planning on:

Maybe conducting a survey on the likelihood of buying pen holders for your desk, be it a dorm or at home

Offering some for free to see how they look on people’s desks

starting with a VERY small amount to test the waters

I also want to make some very special! Like pen cups that have unique styles like paint buckets or turtle shells.

I also thought about how easy people are able to replicate it and sell. I think it would be VERY difficult unless they learned 3D modeling. Sure they can just find 3D printable pen holders online but they would have to have a 3D printer, pay for filament, and considering the printable items are already marked up on the site, they would have to sell it for more than I would due to the production cost. So I think I can make same or better quality for cheaper cost. Do you think it’s wise to list both price and production cost if I do start selling? I thought maybe it would show honesty to anyone buying.

My mindset:

I don’t see it as making bank off of, but if it fails, I can put it as a startup example for future resumes. If it makes money: Put it on resume and collect the money

Thanks!
