Carney Government Announces Additional $1.5b Tariff Support For Canada's Manufacturing Industry
The Carney government is introducing additional support for the metal, steel, aluminum, and copper industries that have been significantly affected by tariffs imposed by the United States.
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly and minister responsible for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario, Evan Solomon, made the announcement in Vars, Ont., Monday.
"We can't control what's going on south of the border, but we can control what we're doing here at home. And so, in a moment like this, we just don't stand still, we act," Joly said.
Solomon announced $500 million in funding through the Regional Initiative delivered by the Regional Development Act in addition to the creation of a $1-billion program under the Business Development Bank of Canada to strengthen the manufacturing sector, bringing the total funding to $1.5 billion.
The program will be available to industries that manufacture and export products containing steel, aluminum, or copper.
