KOTA KINABALU (May 11): As Umno marks its 79th anniversary, its Sabah chief Datuk Seri Panglima Bung Moktar Radin has issued a rallying call to party members across the state to rise, unite, and prepare for the upcoming 17th state election.

In a strong message, Bung Moktar reminded Sabahans that Umno is not just a party of the past but a force that continues to shape Malaysia’s and Sabah’s future.

“Alhamdulillah, today all Umno members are celebrating the 79th anniversary of our beloved party — a party that has been the backbone of nation-building and the voice of the grassroots,” he said.

He highlighted Umno’s legacy in Sabah, including the establishment of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), the state’s first local university, as well as the construction of schools, clinics, roads, mosques, and the creation of jobs and business opportunities.

“This is not rhetoric. It is a living history etched in the reality of the people of Sabah,” Bung Moktar stressed.

He also thanked Umno President Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for his anniversary message, describing it as both a reflection on past contributions and a renewed call to action.

“The President’s message is clear and timely, especially as we gear up for the next state election. He emphasized three crucial points that every Sabah Umno machinery must internalize,” Bung Moktar said.

First, Umno must return to the people. “We cannot rely on promises alone. We must go to the ground, listen to grievances, and offer real solutions. Today’s politics demands leaders who are not just popular but grounded and tireless.”

Second, the party must avoid repeating past mistakes. “Our defeats were due not to our opponents’ strength, but our own internal weaknesses. In Sabah, we must stay united. Differences in opinion must not lead to division. Our fight is with the opposition, not among ourselves.”

Third, Umno must be a party of the future, not just one of memories. “In this digital era and with a new generation rising, we must offer fresh ideas and faces. We need to educate, engage and empower young Sabahans as the next torchbearers of our struggle.”

Bung Moktar called Umno Sabah members to action: “I urge all leaders, machinery, and members of Umno throughout Sabah — Rise! Unite! Fight!”

He concluded, “We will make the 17th state election the stage for Umno Sabah’s resurgence. We will not allow our party to be disrespected by those who never sowed the seeds but now wish to reap the harvest.

We are a party with history — and we will prove we are also a party with a future.”
