Porsche Starts In-house Battery Production For Cayenne Electric

Porsche is taking a significant step in its electromobility journey by bringing the development and manufacturing of high-voltage batteries entirely in-house.

This strategic move aims to secure the brand’s signature performance and quality for the next generation of its lineup, starting with the highly anticipated Porsche Cayenne Electric.

Smart Battery Shop: The Heart of Porsche’s EV Push

At the center of this initiative is the new Smart Battery Shop in Horná Streda, Slovakia. Built in collaboration with Porsche Werkzeugbau GmbH, the facility serves as a cutting-edge production hub for next-generation battery modules.

Strategically located near an existing technology center, the site benefits from seamless integration between prototype development and large-scale production. The result is faster innovation cycles and a highly efficient manufacturing process.

Construction of the 40,200-square-meter plant began in early 2023, with production equipment installed later that year. By May 2024, the facility had already produced its first finished battery module—an impressively fast timeline made possible through close collaboration between Porsche’s development teams in Weissach and production planners in Zuffenhausen.

How Porsche Builds Cayenne Electric Battery Modules

Each high-voltage battery used in the Cayenne Electric consists of six modules, with every module built from 32 individual cells. The production process is highly complex and engineered for precision at every step:

– Strict cleanliness and ESD protection ensure consistent quality throughout manufacturing
– Cell preparation and testing verify each battery cell before assembly
– Precision stacking aligns cells with exact spacing and connector positioning
– Laser welding creates strong electrical and mechanical connections
– Thermal optimization includes gap fillers and cooling plate bonding for efficient heat dissipation
– Structural integration ensures durability through foam stabilization and robust housing
– Final testing includes leak checks, electrical validation, insulation testing, and visual inspections

This tightly controlled process ensures that every module meets Porsche’s high standards for performance and reliability.

Advanced Quality Control and Traceability

One of the standout features of the Smart Battery Shop is its real-time data tracking. Every step of production is monitored and recorded, allowing full transparency and traceability for each battery module—even years after it leaves the factory.

Before approval, each module undergoes rigorous testing, including extreme condition simulations such as high-temperature exposure (up to 100°C) and immersion testing. These procedures validate durability, longevity, and charging capability—critical factors for premium electric vehicles.

Efficient Supply Chain Integration

Once validated, battery modules are equipped with high-voltage cabling and connectors by a supplier. They are then delivered “just in sequence” to Porsche’s Bratislava assembly plant, ensuring streamlined logistics and minimal delays in vehicle production.

Sustainability at the Core

Porsche’s Smart Battery Shop is also designed with sustainability in mind. The facility incorporates:

– Photovoltaic systems to generate renewable energy
– Heat pumps for efficient energy use
– Green roofing to enhance climate resilience
– On-site water supply via a dedicated well

These features reduce CO₂ emissions and support Porsche’s broader environmental goals while maintaining high production efficiency.
