Pick Of The Day: 1966 Chevrolet El Camino

Card image cap

The El Camino represented the fusion of muscle car and pickup truck. The legendary “coupe utility” first made its debut in 1959 and changed the way people thought about hauling cargo. The Pick of the Day, a 1966 Chevrolet El Camino, is listed for sale on ClassicCars.com by a private seller in San Pedro, California.

“The current owner acquired the El Camino in 2008 and relocated it from the east coast to California,” the listing says. “Originally delivered in Ermine White, the truck was refinished under prior ownership.”

Exterior features include chrome bumpers, quad headlights, dual side mirrors, antenna, rocker moldings, and Rally wheels with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

One of the magazine ads for the El Camino portrayed a family watching a race while standing in the bed of the vehicle. “Grandstander!” it said. “Whether being stood on to watch a race, or to please the crowd, Chevrolet’s personal pickup has a singular way of being just what you want it to be.”

We frequently hear the about the “personal luxury car” genre, but I think that was the first time I’ve heard of a vehicle referred to as a “personal pickup.” The name is fitting. When you think about it, the El Camino would make a great date-night vehicle: two-seater with a bench seat, smooth ride, nimble car-like handling, and the versatility of a cargo bed if you want to sit out at the lake, tailgate at a game, or gaze at the constellations while camping out back.

The all-red interior features a vinyl bench seat, lap belts, manual-crank windows, clock, radio, air conditioning (though currently inoperative), and floor mats.

Power comes from a 283ci V-8 mated to a Powerglide two-speed automatic transmission. The owner’s manual will accompany the car.

There’s only one thing left to do: Start planning your El Camino date night! And secure the transportation, of course. The asking price is $30,750 or best offer.
